tank stinks!
i think i have made a big mistake since i have upgraded to halides my sand has been throwing out hundreds of bubbles i was told that it was the start of a cyano out break.
sure enough it started appearing on the sand so the other day i was using a power head to blow off any detrus from the rocks and noticed that it was also blowing the cyano off the sand so i blew it all off the sand thinking that the two external filters would pick it up. all i have achieved is cyano everywhere and a stench that will make most people feel sick its that bad i live in a 1st floor apartment and i can smell it on the ground floor what can i do? |

Excuse my ignorance but why would switching to MH cause the sand to release air bubbles? I'm not trying to be a jerk, don't take it the wrong way.

First off I have not experienced any smell from the Cyano I have had in my tank. Maybe someone else could help with this. Looking a the ammonia and nitrate readings you have something that has died. Are you missing any livestock?

could the smell be a result of disturbing the sand?

Is the sand new or is it the original sand? It could be that there was a lot of trapped nutrients and detritus in the sand and you disturbed it further with the powerhead. IMO do a very large water change and maybe run some carbon.
