Water softener water

Just moved into a new house where all the water is on a water softener. I typically use tap water that's been run through a Pur filter. Can I use the water from the water softener?

Test the TDS of the water you want to use, or have somebody with a tester test it. Use the number to answer your question, if you want to use it or not.

Arn't water softeners, water run through salt?

Probably not a good idea. Get a copy of your water utilities annual water quality report though and study it. If you are like us here in Phoenix and fed with water from the Colorado River, fed via the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California in your case then it can be not only hard as a rock but it can contain things like volatile chemicals from rocket fuels and other nasties. The carbon in a Pur or Brita helps a little but nothing is a substitute for a RO/DI unit.

Thanks for the info. I actually live in Ohio, now, but your advice is well taken and applies to my new location. Probably time go get an ro/di unit for my new house. I guess that I should look at the ingredients on the water softener salt bag to see what it adds to the "mix" other than salt. Thanks again,
