Get some poly filter from marine inc. This stuff I have been using for years. I keep this in my sump as a safety back up and this stuff works. I have done testings on this stuff to see if it was real or just another product trying to be pushed on the market. well it works not just a little but works vary well adsorbs everything that is bad that you don't want in your water. You still need to do water changes and not to over feed and so on. But it is a nice back up to have in your sump because the stuff works and does not release toxins back into the water as it gets older. I change mine out every two months or until it tuns brown. good luck. here is a discriptiuon on it.

(2) 4x8 Poly filter from Poly Bio Marine Inc.

Highly adsorbent chemical filter media pads quickly and efficiently remove impurities, medications, and phosphate from aquarium water. Use in conventional power filters, undergravel filters, the chemical filtration compartment of canister filters and wet/dry filters.

Simply cut to any size or shape to custom fit any aquarium filter. Rapidly improves water clarity and actively removes harmful organic and various inorganic waste buildup for several months. Changes color to indicate the pollutants being removed and when Poly-Filter is exhausted. Will not leach pollutants upon saturation. Used by researchers, hospitals, etc. For use in freshwater or marine aquariums.

Pad size - 4" x 8"

You said "removing" and not "prevention", but it's worth checking your water source for phosphates. These will build up over time from evaporation.

poly filter is good removal and a preventive measure you can use either way the stuff works I deliberately placed a poly filter in a control tank to measure the affectiveness with high levels of phosphate and the next day my test get did not read any traces of phosphate . keep in mind it was a 20 gallon tank something bigger im sure it takes longer.
