aquascaping

I know this sounds pretty dumb, but is there a proper way to aquascape. I did my 150 gal tank and my lfs said that there is not enough places for fish to hide. He also told me to use base rock on the bottom so that my lr does not turn black in 4-5 years. Now I cannot seem to get it the way I want. (i.e. tank of the month dec. 2005) So any help will greatly appreciated. thanks

thats a new one to me...i wouldnt worry about that. Sounds like BS to me

How much rock do you have and what size tank is it?

I would suggest putting a couple of the biggest rocks on the bottom and sort of building upwards from there, making bridges here and there. Some people like to use one big rock in the middle as a sort of...whats the word..focus point???

my tank is 150 gal with about 160 lbs in the main tank and 50 lbs in the sump. It sounded weird to me that lr wopuld turn black because I had a 55 gal for 6 years and never had any probs. My goal is to make a reef on the left side, an island in the middle and a bar on the right. I have no clue how to do this though. Ineed help!!! lol

hm...for that middle island, i'd try to use your biggest rocks....if you have any really large ones, thats where to put it.

Then for that big part that guy has on the left, its hard to tell but i think its just made from a lot of different rocks that were just stacked upwards...

And if you're having trouble getting them to stick, try using some of that putty stuff.

I've always been told to build rocks up like a pyramid. Put 3 rocks down in a triangle as a base and then place one rock in the middle. Thats for maximum sturdiness.

And the LFS guy suggesting using base rock as the base of your aquascape isn't a bad suggestion. Half of the base rocks will be covered in sand anyway, so why not use the cheap stuff for it?
