Correct pronounciation of "chaeto"
Just making sure I am saying it right. "K EYE TOE" since I have heard it pronounced "K EYE TOE MOR FA". Sorry for the dumb question.

pretty sure that's right. that's how I say it, and the "know it all" guy at my LFS that LOOOOVES correcting people says it that way too. So I'm sticking with it.

The more common way to say it (at least in the "american" dialect of nomenclature) is "Key-toe-morf-ah." The only other variation would be "Kay-toe-morf-ah," but you won't hear any scientists in the US pronouncing it like that.

I think it is worse to correct someone or be corrected then to pronounce it incorrectly lol....

Quick tip-- any scientific term (botanical, biological, chemical, etc.) that starts with a "Ch" is Greek in origin and is pronounced as a regular "K". Something I learned in my years in the ornamental plant business.

It's that dang ae vowel. It used to be a single letter, and I wish my keyboard had it. It was used in words like Caesar. We pronounce it "incorrectly" as See-zar. I'm not sure by what standard we should be pronouncing these latin words, since there are no native speakers of latin alive (that I know of anyway).

We know how to pronounce latin pretty well, given all the other scripts that translated it (we have arabic texts, etc. that give it pretty accurately). The problem with nomenclature, and I can't emphasize this enough, is that it is NOT latin and can't be treated as such. If it were pronounced in actual latin (i.e. what the romans would have spoken), then it would be pronounced "Kye-to-morf-ah." There are some standards of pronunciation and I touched on them briefly, but for the most part, there isn't an entirely correct way to pronounce the names. I try to go by what sounds proper in our dialect and what most scientists tend to go by.

if it were Latinized Greek it would be KI-to, with a long I. [Greek doesn't have an ae, but uses ai].
But since English ignores the front component of diphthongs and softens Latinic C's [SIP-i-o for Scipio: ugh!], I read it as either KEE-to, or CHEE-to, like the crunchy yellow stuff.
