Is the NY aquarium worth visiting?

I will be heading to NY for the long weekend and am in the process of making a list of places to visit. With my new found fish hobby I'm interested in visting the NY Aquarium but I just wanted to make sure the experts think it's worth it!

Thanks for any opinions!

IMO, Yes, the NY Aquarium in Brooklyn is definitely worth visiting. If you have the time, the Norwalk Aquarium, about 50 minutes outside of the sity is decent as well. Not as good as the NY one though.

Ok great I think I will add it to the list

How busy does the place get? Could we just show up on a Saturday and get in?

If I do end up going you guys can expect a ton of pics!

if you get the time the bronx zoo has some nice aquariums as well plus they have the amazing new lowland gorilla habitat.

The zoo is on my list as well I think I will have time to visit both.

I'm troubled because it's not a "photography" trip so I can't bring all my gear. No tripod

I'm trying to figure out which lenses I want to take.

I am leaning towards 50 F1.4, 24-70, 10-22,

Can't really decide between 300 F4 IS vs Sigma 70-200 2.8. I would love the versatility but 200mm is kinda short and no IS is frustrating. OTOH, my 300 was kinda long at the Toronto Zoo.

Decisions Decisions!!

Been a while since I've visited there. But it does get busy and crowded around this time of the season. Before you go check in (call or read website) about their scheduled daily animal performances with seals, dolphins and others. Park in their paid parking lot for convenience and safety. The earlier, in the day, you go the better the viewing.

I agree....if yuo're a reef guy, and you want to go to an aquarium, go to Atlantis Marine World. They've got the largest reef in America, IIRC. (Atlanta is 50%+ fake corals right now...Altantis is all real)

Joe (the curator) is a great guy too, and seems to love talking reef.

The NY Aquarium in Brooklyn is one of the top 10 aquariums. Although, Monterey, National in Baltimore, Mystic's are all way ahead. But Brooklyns is def worth the visit!

I'm travelling with my girlfriend and she doesn't even like my fish tank so I doubt she'd find a reef interesting at all.

I don't know New York at all so it's difficult for me to find where these places are (I haven't had any chance to plan yet!) but I will definitley look into the Atlantis.

Unfortunately (for the photogs who understand) I'll be shooting my 70-200 NON-IS handheld only Don't think it will work out too well.

Brooklyn aquarium is older, i mean its nice but i buzzed through it in a half hour. It just depends how many public aquariums you've been to, weather or not you'll like it.
I like that I took a subway from manhatten and then got dumped off right across the street from the aquarium, its convenient.
I wish i had gone to atlantis instead though.
I dont really care about watching seal shows and all the outdoor sea world stuff the brook also has but thats me.

We're staying at a hotel that is beside JFK airport I believe. Is Atlantis really far from there?

I think they have a shuttle bus that takes you to the subway so we can access stuff that's by the subway?

I've only been to NY once for 2 days about 4 years ago... we stayed up at like 50th/Broadway for our school trip so I know that area (Manhatten) but other than that I'm lost.
