I would replace it and seed it with your 75 because you will end up with organics from your old sand which can cause a cycle, or you could rinse the sand but be sure to do it real good.

I just upgraded from a 55 to a 120 and I did what Criminal said. I bought new sand and seeded with a "little" of the old sand.

I went from a 24g to a 75g a couple of month ago. I could not get Nitrates below 25ppm. I ended up doing basically what Criminal said. I filled new tank 3/4 the way up and and started to do water blending with new and old 5g back and forth every 5min for a hour. Figured they where better off in there home to acclimate. Then I just put them in the new tank. I was going with a shallow sand bed and put in 40lb's sand before starting. It was already at 1'' . But wanted to use old sand to get bacteria from it. It was so dirty that I only did about 3 cups from it.
The tank tested for about 10ppm nitrates right away. Ammonia was SLITE trace for a few days. Then went to zero. I then tested nitrates to see how they where doing. It was zero as well! It has been ever since. I did not add any more rock or anything. Nitrates must have been in the sand. I thinking I my start cleaning sand in stages every now and then if it rises for sure. |

I would use new sand. But maybe you could rinse some in a bucket full of RO water and scoop it back out. Keep doing this with clean water. Lot of work I thought, so I did just new with seeding.

I recently upgraded from a 46 bowfront to a 120 and used new sand and seeded with about 10 pounds from the 46.
Good luck Tony |

NEW Carib-sea sand is really great live sand. No rinsing or washing involved. use new and seed the new sand if you like.
