what is the proper nitrate levels
mine is between 10-20 ppm is this ok

0-5 is best for reef but for a fish only tank it is good. however i have kept lots of softies with nitrates at 40ppm and all grew very well. now that i am down to 5 they slowed down but i think mostly because of my lighting change.

You can do large water changes to lower the nitrate level. Due to the dilution with new water. I myself also have 20ppm area due to my eels waste. But i have FOWLR tank.
