Eheim 1262. Do you really need that much return flow?

Looks like ehiem's are king!

I do like that much flow because I think it stirs the cheato and makes for better growth. It also keep the detritus in the water column which in turn gets removed via my filter socks.

My sump stays clean, is that bad?

If this is for your 110g, the Eheim 1260 will more than sufficient, but it depends if you have anything installed on the return to the tank. Rule of thumb is 3x-5x turnover of your tank for a return pump through your sump and the rest of the circulation should be powerheads within the tank, like the Tunze s or Koralias. If you want good flow in your sump, you can always put a really small powerhead in there too.

The Eheim 1260 is pretty darn quiet.

The theory of 3x to 5x turnover is fine, the problem is with running the pump return hose and the height increase in the output, you never get nearly what the pump is rated for. I was using an Eheim 1250 on a 300GPH overflow and the return was very slow and the pump even cavatated upon restart. At 0" head all was fine, at 4" of head quite a difference. I love Eheim pumps but when to a Mag 5 which is rated at 500 GPH and am getting great flow with no problems due to a 300 GPH overflow because the length and height of the return cuts the flow that much. Food for thought.....

As NYReef states...Its 3 - 5X display size after headloss, not raw 0' head rating. I like the 1250 for small tanks, 1260 for ~ 75 - 120G, 1262 for 150 - 225G.

I have a 90g, and love the 1260. People comment on how silent it is on a regular basis (ok, reef people make the comment, not the rest of them)

I see absolutely no problem with running as much water as you can through the sump. Limitations are pump, overflow, drains and noise control. I don't know were this idea that less was better came from. Why add other things for flow if you can get it done with the returns.

I don't see the size Mag you're using but all those I've have 9.5 and under are quite. I know the larger ones rattle a lot more.

I have seen a Mag 9.5 add 3 degrees to a 100g tank. Mine. The Eheim 1260 more quiet and took off 2 degrees easily.

Yes, after head loss, 3x-5x turnover.

I am also running a mag 9.5. Turns out the noise was coming from an air pump that I use to pull fresh outside air in to the inlet port of my skimmer.

Still not sure what direction I am going to go here.

I do aggree on heat. I use a mag 9.5 in a 50g drum for mixing ASW. I run it overnight and the temp will be warmer than the tank. I used a 7 in the past and needed a heater. With Mags I think it's a quality issue and not each one is near the same.

Planning an upgrade to a 90 gal tank currently and mine will be the Eheim 1262. Can't be beat IMO.

the 1262 might be too much for a 90g. you really only want at most 5x turnover of your display after head pressure as everyone describes above. so, 450gph max on a 90g is what you are looking for after headpressure from all your plumbing and gagets you put in between. if nothing in between, even a 1260 might too strong. the eheims are very quiet.

I replace my mag 7 with an Eheim 1260.
This pump is very, very quiet.
