I am wanting to buy a refractometer for a b-day gift. What is a good one that will not break the bank, and if I can not find it at my local stores, where could I order it from on-line?

Marine Depot runs specials on refractometers from time to time, that's when/where I got mine.

If you use the link above it will be only $35. It is currently "on sale" for $45. So use the link above for a discount. Minh |

PS - I have the exact same refractometer that I linked above. It works great. The reading is easy to read. Can't beat the price of $35.

I've had very good luck with my Sybon refractometer. I got it from Premium Aquatics.

Just out of curiousity - are there any significant difference between a $40 refractometer vs $120 refractometer? I know that some of the very high end one has a built in light. But any other differences?

The more expensive models are made of metal, not plastic for the most part. More durablility.

The $40 (I think it's $50 now) refractometer I bought from Premium Aquatics a while back is all metal and rubber. It's been pretty good for the money. My only complaint with it at this point is the metal pins they used to hold the plastic lens cover together are beginning to rust, but what can ya do...
