Need Advise Regarding Tank Upgrade?
I'm considering upgrading from a 75g reef to a 120g reef. The 75g has been set up for three years. It has approx. 3 inch sand bed. I would like to use everything from the 75g and add additional sand for the 120g. I realize that I will need to upgrade skimmers, pumps and other equipment as well. My question is can I do the move all at once breaking down the 75g and storing the rock and livestock in bends, add additional sand to the 120g, move the sand from the 75g to form a top layer to the new sand in the 120g, then add water for the 75g with new water to the 120g, adding rock and coral along the way, then finally adding fish, shrimp, snails, etc. Do you folks see any problems with the plan? Your feedback is appreciated. Tips are welcome.
Thanks, Bill |

I upgraded from a 75 to a 120 about nine months ago. I used some of the sad from my 75 but not all and I rinsed it thouroughly. I took the oportunity to rinse all my rock during the transfer as well. There's a lot of sewage in the sand and rock so if you reuse any rinse well. I still had a hard cycle even with 300 + pounds of well established LR. I did move everything in one day after prepping lots of water and containers for the move. Do lots of waterchanges just like a new tank too. Best of luck.
