Cleaning a Sponge Filter
How should I go about cleaning a sponge filter I have in my QT? I currently have fish there, and plan to for the next 5 or 6 weeks. I'm afraid that if I squeeze out the sponge (or replace it with a new one) it may clear out too much of the nitrifying bacteria and cause a mini cycle. Should I put it in a bucket and gently brush the detritus from its surface?
I suppose the best solution is to get another air pump and drop a new sponge into my display tank for a few weeks and then replace the QT sponge with the new one. I just don't have another air pump at the moment. |

Your second choice will do it. But you can also gently clean the existing one and then put it back in the tank.
It's always a good idea to keep the second sponge available for just your situation. Regards, Pat
