In my experience, definitely. Even though my glass was crystal clear, as soon as i pulled the lid off, the tank was noticably brighter.

The glass will not only block some of the light rays, whether you can tell visibly or not, but it will also hinder gas exchange in your tank. You should remove it altogether.

Yes you can remove the glass top if you don't mind your fish carpet surfing and your nice new light encrusted with salt. People think egg crate doesn't reduce the light, but they are wrong. A tank covered with egg crate is really only 90% open due to the area obscured by the plastic. That's no better than glass. Clean the glass once a week and enjoy your fish in the tank, not on the floor.

Not only will it help keep your fish in the tank, but if you're running a sump, that's open top...gas exchange...voila, problem solved!

Blenny's and some clowns will jump too. I came home from work one day and found my poor clarkii on my hardwood floor.

I have often wondered, why not make like a mesh screen to go over the tank to keep jumpers in, but not llimit lighting/gas exchange? Just a thought...

How would a mesh screen, or any screen for that matter, not limit at least some light? By definition if you put something solid over the tank to keep fish in, you're going to keep some light out. Personally, I think it's probably a miniscule amount of light though.

Use the glass top. It looks better, is easily cleaned, protects your lights, keeps dust from settling into your tank, helps keep heat out, looks better than eggcrate. The belief that glass blocks out more light than eggcrate or anything else is BS. Eggcrate will block out just as much as well as creating other problems. Though if you don't have a sump, you shouldn't use a glass top because of gas exchange. If you do have a sump, you have adequate gas exchange and can cover the top as much as you please. I highly recommend at least putting a 6" fan over your sump though to help gas exchange and circulation in the cabinet.
