high/low voltage

getting zapped every now and then. I tell my wife and kids to kill the power before touching anything near the tank water. my question is what happens in the tank if there is an electrical problem somewhere unknown? do powerheads get shorts , bad cordage and such. If yes and the power doesnt break, what happens to the stock? I seen a colt coraL GET IT from a jelly, the thing went limp.
