Thumbs up what size pump and what size overflow?

im in the process of setting up a 50 gal breeder. its my first decent size reef tank and im still learning.

im going to drill the tank and use just a straight vertical pipe w slits cut at the top as my overflow. my question is what size dia. pipe should i use and what GPH pump should i get so that my tank doesnt overflow or my sump doesnt run too low?

any advice is greatly appreciated

If it were my tank, I would go with 3/4" on the overflow pipes and an Eheim for a return. I think the 1260 is like 600gph which, with head height and a gate valve, you could tune to perfection for a 50g.

My $0.02

I would go with a 1" drain pipe and a Eheim 1250.
3/4" of drain pipe only allows 300-400 GPH of water, A Eheim 1260 is 635 GPH and will likely overwhelm the pipe.

1" Drain and eheim 1250 on 1/2" return is what I'm doing for my 50 breeder.

I would go with a 3/4" return pipe, larger pipe = less resistance = more flow. Plus it give you more room if you decide to upgrade later...
