Recommend a salt mix to a newb?
Hi..
As I continue the quest to get my 92 gal up and running, I come to the issue of choosing the appropriate salt mix Right now I'm working on more of a FOWLR system (which is obvious to those who have read my tank stocking post), though that's not to say I might not get into some softies later. I'm wondering if I should go with a mix that is for reef setups, like Red Sea Coral Pro as opposed to just a standard salt mix for two reasons: A - I'm planning on ordering the package from TBS, so there will undoubtably be things that arrive on the rock that could benefit from it, and B - I have a whole house water softener/ über-filtration system that I think takes out everything but flouride. Opinions? Thanks in advance! Natalie |

It really depends on if you plan on keeping corals in the future and your husbandry techniques.
Some salts are geared more for fish only tanks but still can be used if you want to keep corals but they generally need additional supplementaion of other trace elements like Calcium, Magnesium, and can sometimes make it harder to keep your Alk and PH at appropriate levels. Some of the more reef-ready mixes also need additives like Calcium but this only becomes an issue if you are keeping an abundace of corals and other inverts that use up calcium faster than the salt can add it back to the tank. |

You can't go wrong with Reef Crystals.
If you go with Tropic Marin Reef Pro, you have to mix up the salt before you mix any with water. Depending on where in the bucket the salt is coming from, the numbers for ca, alk, mg vary greatly. I'm using TMRP now and it's crazy.

I like and use Instant Ocean. It is priced well and a great, consistanct salt IMO. I believe more tanks that are RC Tank of the month use Instant Ocean.
Cheers, Chris |

I just bought Seachem the first time at the recommendation of my LFS, who said I would prefer it over ReefCrystals (what I had been using).
What do you like about Seachem? It sure is expensive! |

Quote:
it has higher levels of trace elements.. i dont have to "dose" anything.. that is cheaper for me in the long run as i have a 300 g tank.... if you do small water changes every week (20-30% a month) seachem is the best salt to use....
