cheato from display tank to fuge

i have cheato growing on my rock in my display tank and am wanting to harvest that to my fuge. can i just pull it off and place it in my fuge or do i have to remove the rock it is on and put it in my fuge. is there a certain way to do it so it will still be alive and effective in my refugium.

From what I've seen many just leave it as a tumbling ball in their fuge.

i didn't know cheato attached to anything? i thought it just floated around
