Is this cyano?
This is the only patch of this stuff I have in my tank and it seems to come and go. Usually by evening time it looks to be gone, but is always back in the morning. The picture was the best I could get but it has a velvet like appearance and always has those air bubbles on it. Is it likely cyano? If so, what do I do to get rid of it?

yes. Less feeding, increase flow, less light. these can all help.b it depends, would need to know your habits and such.

I feed twice a day. In the morning my tangs get their nori and I feed the tank one cube of either mysis, brine or krill. In the evenings tangs get their nori again and I feed cyclopeeze and Formula One soaked in Selcon. (a pinch of both)
The tank has two Koralia 4's and one MJ 1200, in addition to my return pump. Lights run 12 hours a day. (VHO's, no MH) What should I change and should it be a permanent change, or just temporary until the cyano goes away? Also, why does it seem to go away in the evening? Thanks! |

decrease your lighting time. But do not do it suddenly 12hrs is a long time. I run my light on mine for 7hrs a day with no probs. Do you shut your pumps off while feeding. This is a good idea it helps with getting all the food eaten. you def. do not want left over food to feed this cyano. You might be feeding a bit much, but you do have a 125g so i cannot be certain on that. In order to nip it in the bud you could try leaving your lights off for a few days. I have read that this can help your reef very well. Do a search on that. They have cloudy days in the tropics too so it makes sense. You look good on water flow. How are your water changes. do you do them weekly or so? that helps also. I would go to say its your lighting schedule. 12hrs is a long time. its not unheard of . But if its kinda like traffic. You have one car break down and it affects them all. So if you feed to much one day and them they get 12hrs of light then it just builds up. Make sense? Oh do you have a refuge with cheteo in it? There are lots of things you can do. Its just a combo of things that you can make work. Just keep at it. You seem to have a great tank. So just polish it up. side note kudos on being a stay at home mom. I am a single dad and watch my son(3yrs) during the day and work at night. I know how it can be. (oh also keeping tabs on my tank.) :-)

If all else fails use chemi-clean works great. Many people dont like using chemicals in their tank but I have personally used it in two tanks without any loss of life and I never saw the cyano return. Reducing light, feeding, and water changes will help also.

Harold, I hadn't thought of siphoning it off the rock. I have my water change scheduled for tonight when the kids go to bed so I'll try it!
Ryan, thanks so much for the ideas. I will cut my lighting back gradually and go to around 9-10 hours a day and see if that helps. I haven't been shutting my pumps off when I feed but I'll start doing that. I do a weekly, 10% water change. I don't have a fuge but it's something I'm working on getting done. I don't have the room under my stand for it (sump and top off container take up all the space) so I'm kicking around the idea of a display fuge. How on earth do you manage to work AND be a the daily care giver of your son?! I am dead on my feet by 7:00 every night! I can't even imagine my work day just starting at that point. (I have a 2yo son and an almost 5mo old daughter) |

Got ya! now i see why you made the comment about some ppl not wanting to add chemicals. I was like I dont consider chemi pure to add chemicals. I would not use that stuff(chemi clean). Thats just me. That seems to be a quick fix. Like I said before there is a reason cyano grows. I had this problem for a few weeks and then through lots of research and others on this and other forums figured out why. Stopped doing what I was doing and or doing something I was not doing. I have no problems with any algae to date. No offense to you,
somtimes you have to do what you have to do. I dont know how I do it either. Coffee helps. Last edited by Ryanhdd; 07/06/2007 at 04:43 PM. |
