Flower Pot Coral, Goniopora Coral
Okay, so I did a lot of background on Goniopora (Flower Pot) Coral and I know the success of keeping these beauties is less then 10% over 12 months. But I love corals that move with long polyps like Xenia and long stem toad stools.
So I picked up a beautiful green (fluorescent) Flower Pot this weekend. I run a refug Ecosystem method and my corals just thrive. My LFS was honest and said they are a hit and miss coral, however, he's seen them do very well in an EcoSystem tank. I have place them mid depth (about 10 inches from the water level) with moderate flow (the polyps move in non violent fashion) and with excellent access to my T5 H0's. So...anyone with experience with Goniopora sp, Flower Pot? Thanks guys in advance.

I have somehow for an unknown reason been able to keep mine for over two years now and it grows like a weed. It was tiny when I got it and had maybe about 6 polyps and now has more like 50. I do not spot feed it at all but I do feed my fish quite heavily and I have seen it grab food. I honestly had not expected to still have the thing but its showing no signs of dying.
I guess since I have no idea what Im doing right, I will just explain the tank. Its a very basic and higher nutrient tank. 65G, No sump, no fuge, nothing but a HOB skimmer and 90lbs. LR. I feed the tank phyto whenever I remember...usually once a week or so I guess. The flower pot is in very little flow between some rocks on the sandbed. It gets decent light but nothing too intense (I had it higher once and it looked terrible). Other than that, the nitrates in the tank are usually around 30. Its a all softie with a few LPS tank and they seem to love the higher nutrient water. Good luck! |

I had one about 6 years ago and was doing well for about 6 months then for no apparent reason it retracted to never be seen again. I recently got another one that a local LFS was selling for 10 bucks because he said it would not open after he fragged it, Ive had it for about 3 weeks now and it has never opened but the flesh is still a fluorescent green, i hope it recovers but very doubtful. I personally do not plan on every getting another one for the fact of the high mortality rate.

So far so good here. My mom bought one a couple months ago and I'm getting some pretty good extension. I don't notice much growth, maybe since I don't pay much attention to it much, lol. We'll see how it does within a year. Its getting some nice flow and waving around nicely since its in the middle of the tank.
