Fuge & Sump
I hear talk about people having a separate sump and fuge tanks. How are people plumbing these systems and is there any benefit to this rather than normal baffling? Is it possible with a RR equipped with a single drain and single return?

from what I understand, it's all about flow rates and contact time when it comes to refugiums. The faster you run water thru a 'fuge the less effective it becomes because the algea has less contact time.

Some people will have separate sumps and fuges for more room and the rubbermaid stock tanks work great since they are low cost. If you take a standard tank and divide it up and have the return in the middle or on an end, it will work just the same as long as you aren't running too much water through it. Either way will work and it's just a preference to some reefers to have a separate tank for each.

I am interested in the setup, as it would give me a bit more room. how are people transfering water from the sump to the fuge at the same rate the return pumps into the tank? are they just plumbing the 2 together at a low point? I can see this working with glass, but not for rubbermaids... what am I missing? or are they just using multiple return pumps?
