Question Which live rock??

There are so many types of live rock I am confused by the choices. Marshall, Fiji, Tonga Self, just to name a few. I understand the importance of live rock so I don't want to skimp here. Can some one explain the difference in the rocks and suggest a good type and supplier. Thanks

Those are all good choices. I'd buy what you think looks best. The Tonga shelf is not what I'd consider a meat and potates rock. It's used more for accent pieces. The Marshall Island and Fiji are good choices for the bulk of your rock (if not all). www.premiumaquatics.com always has nice live rock.

Does one have an advantage over the other?? Is the difference in shape only?

Tampabaysaltwater FTW!

It's got SO many critters and life in it, that I wouldn't even waste my time looking at other rock. I only bought a few lbs of it, but it seeded my tank and spread life everywhere.

there is a difference in how porous the rock is, and in shape and price.

Fiji is generally lighter then say tonga shelf. you could do fiji base, with tonga shelf pieces on top, giving you tables for coral placement. All live rock will have some critters. some are good, and some are bad. I put 140# of dry Fiji and Tonga shelf into my 120. I took the dry rock, and I built my islands exactly the way I wanted. I was able to take my time, drill the rock, and insert rods into the holes for support. Then I pulled the rock, and took it to my LFS, where the owner is putting it into a 300g system with pods, Coralline algae, and additional LR. it will be live rock when I am read to add it back into my tank.

I also would recommend PremiumAquatics.com . I purchased
55 lbs of Kaelini Cured Live rock and requested some odd shaped rocks, rather than uniform bolder type rocks. They sent me some GREAT shapes and I was able to build rock formations that I love with two caves and an overhang and lots of swim throughs. I also had it at my house in water within 24 hours of when they shipped it. At first, I was sold on TampaBaySaltwater because of the great abundance of life everyone reports that they got on their rock, but I also read from others that their rock was heavy as cement. Don't know if that's true, but that's what a lot say. I wanted a lighter more porous rock.

The various kinds of rock you find will have different levels of porosity. I would look for the most porous rock you can. That is more surface area for maximum bio filtration. Other than that, it's just looks.
