My new maroon pair

I've been looking for a pair of GSMs for about a year and a half, and the search is finally over! A week or so ago I came across an ad on another forum for a young pair, and today I got to go pick them up These poor fish, they were rejected by their first owner because his kids didn't like the 'funny looking clowns'; they wanted a REAL Nemo. Their most recent owner is changing over to a less aggressive fish mix so again they had to go. Quite frankly, I'm happy these guys didn't want to keep them, because I'm thrilled to have them From now on, they'll have a tank of their own where they can play until they're old and grey without having to worry about other fish invading their territory.

The QT where the maroons are currently housed is VERY well established - it's always running, and fed regularly even if there are no fish. Just to make them feel at home I stole some rockwork from our 90g tank; I figured they might like this better than a few small PVC pipes laying on the sand. Besides the clowns, there are crabs, worms and about a zillion pods running around (mmm, snacks!) They'll live here until September 1st when we move to our new apartment - at that point they'll go into a 30g with lots of LR and softies and hopefully never have to move tanks again.

Here they are, I've named them Punch and Judy . Sorry for the picture quality, they're hiding and the lights are dim, so it was a challenge to try and get a good shot.

The tank:

They are cute but they can be aggressive. Mine used to attack me (I sold them when I moved). Good Luck.

Whisperer - Oh believe me, I know they can be nasty - that's why they're going to have their own space. I had a pair of saddlebacks last year that killed some more timid fish when they started to mature. I gave them their own tank, but later lost them to a brook infection - it moved so fast that they were gone before I could ID what was happening and try to stop it. I was devastated, they were wonderful fish.

After that, I made the decision that if I found another pair of saddles or a pair of GSMs, they'd always live alone so they won't have to feel that their territory was being invaded, and no other fish will be subjected to their aggression. We're resurrecting our old 30g reef just for these guys; hopefully they'll be able to live out their lives there but if not, I'm fully prepared to upgrade. I LOVE maroons, they're worth the trouble and these guys were well worth the 18 month wait to find a healthy pair.

I have an ocellaris who bites, and I'm prepared to wear my Coralife gloves when I go into the maroons' tank - but a definite thanks for the heads up on that - the first time a clown bit me it did shock me, you don't expect something so cute to bite so hard!

What a good looking couple.

Are they mature enough yet for you to tell male from female?

Have had mine for over 3 years now. The male is about 1/4 of the size of the female.

While not bothering anything else in tank, except close wanderer when eggs are laid, she hates me.

Will literally leap out of water to bite when I am feeding.

Never do I put hand in tank without a rubber glove as she will constantly attack.

Guess she never heard the rule, "never bite the had that feeds you"

LOL HEYA!! They're doing great, I'm just over the moon. Thanks again

OmarD - they're definitely a male and a female, she's easily twice his size. Funny thing is, she's not as brave as he is - he's venturing out to explore, and she's still staying put for the most part. Seems to me it should be the other way 'round, the larger, stronger fish should do the exploring to make sure the neighborhood's safe, but hey - he IS the man of the house, so...

That won't last for long.

The reason he is not female, is the other was more dominant and stronger.

You will see.
