So I gave my snail a hat

While I was moving things around 2 polyps blew off a rock and I didnt have anywhere to put them. So I figured I would glue them on one of my Astraea snails. This was about 2 weeks ago. I am now seeing a third polyp starting to form. I call it my portable zoa frag

I think they need small anemones to ward off fish that want to eat them. Some stinging inverts

I bought my asterias and one had a spec on it. 3 months later I think it's a nem but I'm not sure. It's larger than the snail fully extended. I should get a pic and let ya'll identify it for me. But yes, it wanders with the snail and has had no ill will on my tank thus far. I even feed it when I can reach it.

I had a similar experience with one of my ceriths...one day I found a small frag of my kenya tree attached to his shell (not sure how it happened....good luck i guess). It lived on his back for about a month, but sadly the frag died when the snail got too close to my powerhead as I cleaned off the cage ....still cool though!

Yeah my old decorator crab had a bunch on him but they never opened since he hid during the day. That snail is the only one. The snails usually dont move much during the day so the polyps get light and stay open. Its gonna look nice when the shell is covered.

Very cool! Wouldn't it be something if the frag managed to attach to rock one day and hold the snail down.

I love it! The idea of an ever-changing reef is really cool - if you've got a number of snails, each with 3-5 polyps on its back, just imagine how much fun that would be. I'm moving house soon so I'll be taking down my tank, and I've been wondering what the heck to do with the zoas that have started growing on the tank walls (figured they'd dry out during transport, or get covered up when I set everything up again)... maybe I'll remove them with a razor blade and superglue them to the snails and hermits! Fantastic idea, I love your snail's hat
