cyano/phosphate sponge

I don't have an external filter, just a skimmer - is it ok to put the phosphate sponge in the skimmer return cup that sits in the tank?

I have the a reddish algae starting to lightly grow on my sand (yup, the evillll cyano). I've been blowing it off, luckily its not spreading but its not going away, either. I think I'm guilty of overfeeding, plus I just got new lights a couple weeks ago that are twice as bright as the old light. I've reduced feeding to every other day until I get this under control (lots of pods etc for them to eat anyway), and I'm hooking a timer up to the light to better control the exposure. I was hoping a phosphate sponge would help also...

Ive been paranoid about having things just sit in water, but I think I'll try it. I don't want a full on cyano bloom!!!!

make sure you put it in the direct flow of the return camber

so there is always flow moving around it
