30gal reef tank turned in to a sump for a 40gal reef
what does everyone think of this idea.
i want to turn the 30gal reef tank that i have right now in to a sump for a new 40 gal tank with over flows, some thing i didn't have in the current 30gal(overflows). I've been told that the bigger the sump the better and i didn't want to go with an over flow box on the 30 and then have a 10 gal sump custom made to fit in the small stand that it came with, and because i'm renting a walk out basement right now i can't go all the way and upgrade to a 90gal or higher reef tank. so i figure get a 40gal made and find or make myself a bigger stand to house a 30gal sump and hold a 40gal display tank. |

you could deff do it but if i were you i would look at a 55 there not to much bigger then a 40 and you could still use the thirty as a sump but the only thing is i asume you have live stock in there now right? a sump is not somthing you can makg in 5 mins. you wahat i think what your gonna have to do is have the 40 (or what ever size you get) set up and ready to go move everything into and get something to filter the water. hook up you skimmer right to your display until you get the sump built

because the new tank is going to have an overflow, i can just shut off the lines running down to the sump( have the line plumped in already)and then fill the new tank with the water from the old tank and 20gals of new water and then quickly do the transfer of stock and LR. should i use the same sand bed or add completely new sand to the new tank?. Do you think the 250watt 14000k MH pendant will be enough for the new tank size?
