AquaC Remora
I just bought an Aqua C remora with a RIO 800. Does the skimmer work better with a maxijet 1200? I have a maxijet 1200 now I can use instead but it has the venturi air line do I just plug that hole. Is it worth doing

The more pump the better. I had a MJ on mine and I liked it on my smaller tank. Dont worry about the venturi hole it will be under water.

I'm sorry someone told you the remora was a good skimmer. Like many newer guys to the hobby you will think this skimmer is pretty good, as your last skimmer way probably a seaclone or similar. Here in a few months you'll read more and realize the one cup every other week of green tea is starting to po you. You will then start to look at other hot options. The solution will be to build a sump or get a tunze in tank skimmer. Or an external skimmer. Not tryin to be negative, just sharing the road your headed down. It doesn't matter what pump you add, it'll still perfom sadly.

I use an AC Urchin, basically a remora that is a sump model.
I use a Rio 6 Hp, 350 gph. with it on a 50 gal. display. It works well for me. I had to install an overfill collection container, got tired of emptying it several times a day. I don't know how it will work on a larger system, but it's just fine on my 50 JMO Steve 926

If you find yourself having to empty the collection container a few times a day, you should raise the cup a bit higher so you get more dry skimmate. I haven't emptied mine in over a week and a half and still see more skimmate. I'll prob clean it out tonight.

I've run a Remora Pro and a Remora HOB skimmer on two different tanks, and they have worked beautifully in both. I used a Mag 5 pump on the Pro, and I use a MJ 1200 on the Remora right now. I empty dark, concentrated skimmate every 4-5 days.

Skimmate output is also based on the bioload in the tank. The more you put in the more is put out.

I disagree with Luke33. Lots of remora's around our local club that do a good job.

The vast majority of owners feel that the AquaC Remora products are great skimmers. Do a search here on RC and you'll find very few dissatisfied owners.

I'm not gonna argue with ya man, i'm glad you had luck with your remora's. Aqua c does have excellent customer service, if not the best. There sump skimmers are good performers, its just this one i dislike. However, you will find tons and tons of remora's on ebay for sale. I bet there's 10 or so on there right now. UPS bought mine for $200(lol)

luke33 is correct, the Remoras are basically a garden variety HOB skimmer in a field where none of them are good performers with the possible exceptions of the Bermuda Rogue Wave, the Octopus and the Deltec HOB models......all the others are pretty much lumped together in one big substandard performing class.
IMO the reason some people say they are great performers is because they have not yet owned what is widely considered in this hobby to be one of the top notch skimmers to compare it to, if they did they would certainly see the huge difference in performance.

I don't think the remora is bad, it just does its job and I'm satisfied. I've got in on my nano tank and it looks good on my nano.
I'm sure if I paid $$$$ and got a Bubble king, Deltec, Tunze, etc it would blow the remora out of the water. |

Luke is right. The Remoras are very mediocre skimmers that have a better reputation than they deserve.
