How fast can a tank be cycled?

It's kind of stupid question, but I don't have much time.

I am starting a nano with sand and rock from an established 240g tank. The water can actually be used also.

Will the new tank have any kind of cycle at all?

I have a carpet anemone that needs to come out of the big tank, he's just not happy in there.

The nano will keep the the carpet and a pair of clowns.

It should cycle within a few days if you're using established sand & rock. I'd only use 50% of the established water though. Think of it as a 50% water change. Check your numbers for a few days & once they all reach "0", have at it..............

No question "stupid"!!

I setup nano last week. water, rock, corals from main tank. New sand.

Checked params after couple of hours. All OK. In went fish. Been doing great ever since.

(using hang on filter till I get a replacement pump, which failed, from DFS)

If everything is already established then you shouldn't have any cycle at all.

Yea, if you run the rock from one room to another youll be fine. Transporting it from the LFS or shipping it will cause a cycle.

If there is any sponge on the rock, use 2.5 gallon freezer bags to transport the rocks so they dont touch air, if sponges touch air you might have some die off.

I wouldn't suggest any sort of carpet for a nano. They create too much waste and need very stable water conditions for a tank that small. In addition most carpets will quickly outgrow any nano. I'd suggest a 40 breeder as a minimum.

That's interesting and noted. The nano is a 29 Biocube, hardly a nano but not a large tank either. My Carpet is very inhappy in his present home. I am hoping the lights on the nano will be enough. the tank will just be the anemone, carpet and some zoos and rics.
