My first paly question?
I recently added some LR to my tank and it came with a single paly on it. It seems to be doing very well. My question is how do i get it to multiply? Will it do this on its own?

Honestly, since you just have the one single polyp, I"d wait until it split at least into two before I tried to manual propogate it. Once that is done, you can slice them right down the middle, or cut the tip off, multiple ways to propogate them, but for the most part, these are fairly easy corals to care for and readily spread on their own. just make sure flow and placement under the lighting is sufficient. Paly's tend to stretch really bad when they need more lighting. In that case place them higher up, if they are squatty and look as though their trying to lower themselves away from the light...take notice and move em down some. They're pretty adaptable though as far as flow and even lighting is concerned. Wearing gloves while handling them is highly recommended. I forget if paly's have the same toxin that zoo's are known for but I wanna say they do....or at least may.

When you say move them down, do you mean remove them from the rock at their base and literally place them on another rock? Or move the rock altogether?
As far as flow goes, should i place it in the direct path of my powerhead? |

the toxin in zoos is called palytoxin, and it comes actually from palythoas.
just double check that your paly isn't a mojano or an aiptasia anenome. you could move either the rock or just the paly if they need more light. they are very tough though to get to stick to another rock, and i eventually had to squish them between two rocks to keep mine from floating away. when i glued them, they would shed the dead skin that the glue was attached to. they like some flow, and they wont object to some mysid shrimp or chopped up seafood as well. |

Here is the paly in question. I am pretty sure it is not either of the ones you listed. Light isn't an issue for it - it is more towards the top of the tank. That is why i was asking about moving it, i would have to move it towards the bottom of the tank. |

sweet hitchiker what will happen is there should be a ball forming at the base where more polyps will start forming out of. enough light good flow, and maintain alk calcium ph and magnesium, and give it a couple meaty treats, and it will start reproducing i wouldn't move it unless you see it really having issues or just want it in a different spot

NIce. I have one that looks kinda like that, cept stubbier. I'm afraid that the Green star polyps it hitched a ride with will overtake it. I have 3 polyps. Dont suppose you could give me a way to place them somewhere else without breaking the rock? Don't mean to hijack the thread but its kinda on topic....

I'd imagine you would frag it like some do mushrooms...slice through the stem horizontally. It may reproduce at the old base but even if the GSPs overtake it you'd have the top relocated.
