54G Bowfront Corner tank w/Green Star Polyps and Coraline Algea

When I bought my 54G corner reef tank it had star polyps all over the live rock and they were growing like crazy, but there wasn't a lot of coraline algea. Now, there's tons of coraline algea and it seems to me that it is killing the star polyps. My LFS says that's not possible, and that they should just grow right on top of the coraline, but I'm not convinced. I only have a few small clumps of star polyps left, and I'd like to do something to save them.

I will post pictures of my tank sometime tomorrow when I'm at my other computer. The pictures of when I first got it are much prettier than now, but I'm learning and trying to not kill everything! Any advice is welcome.

Also, in a previous post I was asking about what heaters are the most dependable. Yes, it is summer, but I would like to buy a good heater anyway, so if you have one to recommend, I would really appreciate it!!

Thanks!

What type of critters eat star polyps?

What type of critters eat star polyps? (Bristle worms, brittle stars, hermit crabs...?)

PS, I checked the phosphates and nitrates, both zero.

PH is low at 7.9
KH is 8 degrees

Also, around the same time (6mo. ago) my star polyps started to disappear, so did my xenia, and now I have no xenia.
