Are there any mods for Fluval 304 canister or canister filters?

Well I have a fluval 304 canister and I was wondering is there someway I can make it much more usefull. I hear its useless with the foam causing high nitrates so is there a solution to mod it someway and make it much more usefull?

Take out all the foam. Put Live rock rubble in most/all of the media baskets. Presto it's a "dark refugium" no good for growing algae but a safe place for pods to hang out...

Really the "Nitrate Factory" is only true if you allow the foam to collect garbage for long periods and let it break down...

if you're really good about cleaning it all out on a regular basis you could just run it with foam... but it's so easy to forget about...

that sounds pretty cool, is there a such type of algae that reqiures no light? Hmm I never understood how refugiums work, could someone clarify? How do the pods make it to the tank? And would live sand work? in the cannister?
