skimmer for 80gal system

tank will be 65gal (48X18X17)

area in sump for skimmer will be apx 16"X12" and the TOTAL height of stand will be 32"

also, there is enough room to use an inline skimmer.

i have an ASM G-1X, which i really like, and they say its rated for 150gal, but we all know how that goes. i like the G-1X, and im going to try using it at first, but i dont have too high expectations for it.

what would you guys recommend? ive found the ASM G-3 for $260. i think i might check that out if the G-1X doesnt quite do the trick

any other suggestions?
($300 limit is prefered. $400 is possible).

any info would be great!

I would use a ASM G-1X for the rocking price of $0! You already own it, so why dump the money on a new one?

I have an 80g setup that im starting and I was told that you cant go wrong with euroreef. I got the RS80 for $219 at my lfs. Euroreefs site says its rated up to 220g. I like it so far, very easy to adjust...now if I just knew what it should look like so I can adjust it I would be set.

I agree with Entropy. Use what you have until it quits. The unit you have should be sufficient for an 80g system.

I will third the use it till it quits concept, if all is going well in your tank and you are getting decent skimmate why spend the cash?
If you do get something get an octopus nw150, great skimmer for around $140.

im just thinking down the road. you know, trying to figure out how empty my wallet will be

Always remember that a skimmer is a gret help in managing your water quality but is not absolutely neccesary. Many people have run successfully skimmerless. The only time I would say it is a necessity is in a SPS only or SPS dominant setup. I have run many LPS tanks skimmerless, and certainly softies don't require it - nor do clams, anenomes or any other "filter feeding" or fish only setups. Like I said they can help you keep a higher bioload and help with water quality management but are not a necessity to do so.

Keeping that in mind I would stick with what you aready have. It can probably "handle" the larger tank and it larger potential organic load that will come with it. You probably will not notice a big difference in any event (nor your tank inhabitants).

I kind of did the same thing myself. Used a Superskimmer220 on a 125g setup - 160g total volume. Did that because I already owned it and didn't fancy spending an additional maybe 3 or 4 hundred bucks on a new skimmer. I did a meshmod to the NW and it is handling the tank load just fine. And everybody from the tangs to the angels to the LPS, LTAs, BTAs, Clams and Acros is just fine with it... Of course the famous RC "Skimmer Squad" (a close relative to the RC "Tang Police") would tell me my tank is a 'crash' waiting to happen with only a CSS220 on it... but I been doing this since before alot of them were even born, so I just "smile and wave..."

(Now someone will probably follow this post up next telling you to get a BubbleKing because you will "need to"... )

RS135 from Euro Reef........................ER rates them for 135 gallons, comparable rating would be 300 gallon.

This way, WHEN YOU DO UPGRADE, you'll already have a skimmer that will probably be able to handle your bigger tank..............
