flow question
how many gph is a good flow rate for a 55 gal mixed reef tank?

At least 550 but many people use twice that or more.

really that low? I have a sump return rated at 700 gph which is probably cut down due to distance and a rio 1700 which I think is rated at around 600 so I should be somewhere around 1000 gph flow.. good? or to much or ? what do you thinl

When I say 550 that considers head loss. A minimum of 10X hourly turnover rate is considered adaquate but there is an on-going trend to go much higher. To figure what pump you need you can use The Handy Head Loss Calculator to size the pump.
