Tang Police
I am dropping in a 220 and was thinking of trying to put a purple and yellow tang in the tank. i know the same shape your not suppose to put together. Anyone have ideas, luck etc. They will both be new to the tank so territory has yet to be claimed...
Thanks |

I have seen a lot more that two tangs in a 180g, so you shouldn't have any problems once they get acclimated. Since they are both going in at the same time they should do fine IMO.

I have a Sailfin, yellow, and purple tang in my 210 and added them at different times and everyone is fine. They have been together for 10 months now and doing fine.

I think that is just a general rule. Maybe it just applies to smaller tanks? I see sooooo many tanks out there with all kinds of tangs. Most of those have yellows and purples. I personally would go for it with that size tank and just watch them to be sure everything is ok.

If you have to add multiple tangs at the same time, how do you QT them? Wouldn't you have issues in the QT tank?

I would be prepared to intervene if needed. Which would include having a proper holding tank should you need to remove one.

My yellow has been with me for abit and is in my 120. The purple is new and is in the Q Tank. The yellow is about twice the size of the purple. I may just give the yellow to my buddy and then not have to worry......Thanks for all the replies...

To add to this,
Since your tank is pretty large, having these two tangs should be fine as others have stated. The key, however, is to add them at the same time. Yellow tangs, typically are very easy to take care of and adapt pretty well, however, they are slightly territorial. This is one of the reasons why it is advised to place only one in a tank of the same shape, or add them together in a group of at least 5 or more. In regards to QT them, you can probably use a divider in your QT tank, but make sure you introduce them in your main tank when you are ready, together. Some hobbyist use their refugium as a QT tank, especially if it is on the back of the tank. This way the QT fish can see the actual fish environment, but will not fill the full effects of being stressed. Now, in terms of the Purple tang, the Purple tang "is the most belligerent member of this genus, it will fight fiercely with members of its own species and other tangs. Should be the least fish introduced to the community tank....best kept as a sole surgeonfish, unless in an extra-large tank" -Marine Fishes, A PocketExpert Guide by Scott W. Michael." |

I have a scopas, a yellow, a hippo and a blond naso all in my 180 with no fighting. I think for larger tanks, most of the rules seem to bend or not apply. I would go for it if I were you.

Thank you to all for the responses. A question i forgot to ask is does the size matter. The yellow tang is fairly big while the purple is a baby. Between the tank size and fish size it looks like it might work.
