Sand?
Ok I have read alot of threads about the play sand from home depot., and got many diffrent views. My Question is it good or bad? and does any body have pic of there tank with it. Thanks Doug

I heard that the playsand my leech silicates into the water - and algae runs of off of many things, one of those things being silicates. Also, I heard that long term silicates may cause gill damage to fish. my .02

well here is my 120 with 200lbs playsand and 40 lbs arg live sand mixed in (cant tell its there in the pics but breaks up the design on the surface a bit. i like it) oh and I really cant atribute the algea in these pic to the sand. Tank was on tap for almost a year. Now on RO/DI and starting clear up of algea.

Silicate won't harm fish gills, as far as I know. Silica dust can cause problems with human lungs, though. Silica in the water column can help diatoms and perhaps some dinoflagellates grow, but those organisms also require phosphorus and nitrogen, so some silica isn't going to be enough to cause a problem. Plenty of people are successful with silica sand.
