old water disposal

Does anyone know if the old saltwater can be used in composting or gardens? Is it too salty? I really hate to pour water down the drain in our dry region, but don't want to burn my plants either.

it'll kill grass so I'd imagine it's not good for other plants either. thats the reason there isn't much vegitation on the beach

Even fresh water softened with salt charged resin is not good to grass for repeated watering. That is why in water softener installation they have a by-pass so that you do not use such soft water to water your backyard grass.

Salt kills most plants eventually.

The "old-timers" around here always used to talk about mixing a big salt concentration and spraying it instead of Roundup for weed control on their farms...

I used to use it to kill weeds growing around my front steps. The Romans plowed salt into the fields at Carthage, and completely ruined that land from being able to support crops for many many years.

Don't think is a good idea to dump it down the drain if you have a septic system.

I put mine in 5 gal buckets and (carry) dump it in the street. Kills the weeds along the curb.

If you want to use it one your garden you will need to greatly dilute the salt water... I would say a SG of about 1.003 should be fine... It might even enhace the growth of your plants... hehe....
