Niether A,B or C...

it HAS to be INSIDE the tank about 1/4" to 1/2" BELOW the surface of the water....or however far down you want the water to drain...the siphon will break as soon as the water level goes below the drilled hole...

also drill the hole in the side of the return line or on the back side of it...not on the top...other wise water will spray out of the tank when it is being pumped..

as long as the hole is parallel to the floor or slightly down ward you wont have any problems...

"A ", but go just below the water line, less noise and splashing that way. Also, if the return outlet is just below the water level that will break siphon also. The return on my one tank with a sump is just below water level so it breaks siphon very quickly.

Welcome to the nano forum.

It can be above water level. The advantage above water level is that a snail won't be blocking the hole at just the wrong time

It's just easier, cleaner and safer to have the return close to the surface with the siphon break just below the surface.

ahh those bugger snails for got about them...

i dont have a siphon break on my return, the pipe barely enters the water on my tank...

5/32 is pretty big hole..it doesnt have to be that big but that will work..only disadvantage is there will be more water spraying out the larger hole then the end of the tube, then if the hole was smaller..1/8" is perfect...LOL 5/32 is only 1/32 bigger i guess you will be fine..please ignore my ramble i am too tired to erase it all...LOL
