confused about top off loss when i clean filter

i have an xp3 rena filstar canister filter and when i clean it out i take it to the sink and dump all the icky water that is in the filter (its quite a bit)
then when i return the filter, prime it and plug it in it soaks up alot of the tanks water, like alot! lowering it about 2"
im confused what to do with this water thats been taken up by the filter... do i refill the tank with saltwater? as if its a mini water change? or do i do freshwater??? since part of the loss is now in the filter.....

ugh

test the bad water with a hydrometer/refratometer and see if it's fresh or salt, top off with new water at the same SG

Definitely top off with saltwater, as you just removed saltwater from the tank. Replacing that water with freshwater will lower your salinity.

ImLimbo87 is definately right. Use saltwater to replace the water it takes to fill your canister filter.

Edit: what you are basically doing here is a small water change.
