#4, the flow is very wide and gentle.

If it were me i'd go with a #3 on a 40 gallon to prevent sand storms that a #4 might cause in a 40 gallon.

I also think a #4 in a 40 might be too much. I have 2 #3 in a 60 and I have a hard time adjusting them to not blow the sand all over the place. I have to point them up so now the surface looks like it's boiling. I think I should have gone with 2 #2's.

I was in the same boat with this question. I have a 40 breeder sps. I picked the 2. And am very happy with my decision. I would not go with the three, as my tank is packed, the corals that are close to the #2 are looking like they cant take much more. I can get you a pic if you need just email me at rcypert@yahoo.com.

Id stick with the #3. I have 2 #4's in my 125 and get a little sandstorm every once and a while.

I used to think that having one #4 in my 70 was a lot. It has a lot to do with how you angle it. I now have 2 #4s in the tank and am really happy with the results.
