Does your skimmate stink?

Some tank's have stinky skimmate, some don't. Let's see what the proportions are..

funny, but no. I expected it to stink, but even up close....no smell. The stuff I get on my hands when I clean my skimmer neck just smells like algae, hardly stinky.

Mine is nasty. You can smell from a long ways a way and when I clean it out, I take it outside.

One of the worst smells I can recall encountering. Before I got a ER I had some decent skimmate but not real pungent, since the day I plugged it in its skimming rotten coffee, cup a week.

Recently, I was trying to get the top off the cup to dump the contents in the toilet...the top was a little stuck...when it gave, it splattered all over the bathroom. It was like slightly thick and chunky coffee.

Whereas nobody usually notices the smell, I started hearing complaints from my wife (who was entertaining in the living room - 3 rooms away) almost immediately.

My skimmate stinks...sulphury fish poop is what comes to mind. Maybe it's because I only empty it once a week?

I think reefers totally over-exagerate.

Yeh it smells bad, but not any worse than just a plain ol' rotten egg, and most of the time much better.

If you don't want it to stink quite as bad, pour a little bleach (I use about 1/4 cup in a 1.8L container) in the collection container. That's assuming the collection container has no way to possibly spill into the tank water of course. Not only does the skimmate I have in there not stink, but it's perfectly clear. The stuff in the collection cup on the skimmer itself still stinks pretty bad of course.
