People using your Mag-Float
Does any one have people who see your reef tank and you have your mag float in there and you show them what it is. And now every time they come over they start cleaning your glass. And start scraping the silicone off your tank and they think tHey are cleaning the glass. Or they will make the mag float go down into the sand bed and get sand in between the cleaner and the glass and now you have little scratches on your tank?Does any one else have this happen or is it just me?

Or they move it too fast, it flies off, and runs into your coral... yeah, I've been there.
For a bunch or reasons, I dont leave mine in the tank anymore.

the mag float is the most interesting thing in the tank, according to my husband. Its the only thing he'll touch. Luckily, he doesn't do it often, but when he does, he always tries to knock the snails off the glass with it.
The second most interesting thing, according to him, is my powerhead. He calls it "The Jet Pump." Its only a little AquaClear 50. ![]()

I've used these in my FW tanks since the first day I saw one on sale -- What irks me more than anything is when they're looking at a beautifully aquascaped aquarium teeming with all sorts of life and the first and only thing they say is "hey, what is that white brick thing for?" and promptly walk away.
Just don't tell them what it is, or mumble something about it being a reverse anti-matter decoupling magnifying reactor.. or something...

It sucks especially when you have acrylic. It makes me want to squirt palytoxin in their eyes.

I have a 8 and 9 year old with all kinds of friends and an acrylic tank. I don't leave it in for obvious reasons.

I leave Mag-Floats in all three of my tanks, and haven't ever had anyone touch one. Like you guys, everyone wants to know what they are, and they're fascinated when I explain that it's a cleaner magnet (they're even more so by powerhead magnets), but it doesn't seem to prompt them to start messing around with my tanks. My husband won't go near anything fish related without asking me first, unless it's an absolute emergency (he's saved carpet surfers more than once when I wasn't home) - I guess that's just how we work. I don't touch his computers, he doesn't touch my tanks. We don't mess with our friends' stuff, they don't mess with ours.
Kids I can understand, especially little guys, because they're very curious and don't know better. I'm actually surprised though that adults do this too - I can't even imagine one of my friends behaving that way. I'd set some boundaries for those people who just can't seem to stop themselves - let them know the potential damage they could cause by trying to 'help'. It's very likely they have no idea they're scratching up the tank and damaging the seals, and I'm guessing once you tell them, they'll never touch your Mag-Float again.

Once they know what it is they can't let the thing go. It turns my 30ish yr old friends into 5yr olds again. I don't leave it in the tank any more.

I have a 2 year old and when we visited a friend in Germany, he saw this thing on his tank. Guess what - he tried it out....
I for obvious reasons leave them outside the tank on the top shelf! |

My kids used to try to help. After pointing out that their help was not so helpful (through a stern discussion) they stopped. Now I move the Mag Float to the back glass behind the rock work. It's out of view and out of mind.
