I have a 265 gal reef tank (new) my old one just blew out, but that's a story for another day. I've been using a Mag Float but want something stronger. Thoughts ?? Experiences ??
Thanks ... Skip |

I guess if you really wanted to spend more money, you can. My roommate uses a hammerhead. Search for that one and you will see a series of expensive wood algae cleaners. You can replace the pads on them

You can replace the pads on the magnavore also they sell a tune up kit for it. The wooden magnet cleaners are made by algae free, I've never heard anything bad about them. Personally I have a magnavore 6 for my 90g and the LFS I used to work at used the 6 for a 220 (and it was still a good pull to separate the magnets from each other through the glass. Depending on how thick your glass is I'd suggest either a 6 or an 8. I really like mine. The magfloat I had that was rated for up to 125g kept flying apart when I tried to move it. That's why I got the magnavore. worth every penny IMO.

I use a Magnavore 4ER on 1/2" thick glass. It is PLENTY strong. A 6 on a 90g??! Do you do pullups hanging off of it?

lol I'm looking at houses right now so I'm buying everything big with the intent of using it on the bigger tank i'm planning (240L). I'm about to get an ER RC 250. And i've got a couple of 6100's on the way that I'll dial way back with a 7095. It's going to be the world's most expensive 90 in about a month lol.

hey i use all those products but penn plax makes one that incoporates a razor. this thing clears coraline with one pass. u have to take it appart and clean it to prevent the razor from rusting but its really good. only bad thing is it doesnt float when it is seperated from the outside magnet. i use all the above mention but when i want to clean the thicker stuff i whip this guy out with confidence!

right. If you pick up a grain of sand in it your glass is toast. I use one of those kent sticks for the tough areas on the bottom and just take the blade out and do the top by hand.

we use a Magnavore 6ER on our 125 and it works GREAT....avoid picking up any sand in the pad and your golden...magnets are a B*#@h to seperate if you accidentally get them together but works well even on coralline. Rebuild kits are about $15 (shipped) online- we've got the stick & scraper for the hard to get areas but for the main tank front we use the Magnavore...+ if you accidentally lose the inside piece it floats to the top...our cleaner wrasse like to "surf" the inside piece when we clean the glass...

Be careful with the big ones this kid I used to work with got his finger destroyed by the X. They almost had to chop it off.

oh yeah! with any of these products beware of sand getting stuck in between. it will scratch the glass for sure!.
yes we speak about these products because they are user friendly (hands dont touch water) but if your willing to sacrifice your hand by getting it wet.LOL then a clean new razor does work better than anything ive e=ever used. but of course you have to hold it and get that hand wet and bend and shift it to reach tight areas....ahh poor baby. lol

I use a Magnavore 2er on my 30 cube and am very happy with it. It works quite a bit better then a magfloat.
