175 Watts of MH lighting too much for 29 Gal Tank?

I am currently researching lighting systems for my new 29gal tank. The setup Im looking at now is 175 Watts of MH light supplimented with maybe 20-40 watts of Actinic. Is this too much light for this tank? If I used it I would be around 7 watts of light per gallon. Another reason for this setup would be that its a cheap DIY project. All the parts can be found at lowes, or home depot (except the actinic bulbs) for around sixty total dollars.

7 wpg is not too much light. You can go to 10 or more as long as you acclimate.

I would think you will be fine. Mabe even run 14k or 20 k bulbs. That way you could cut down on the intensity and mabe get away without running any actinincs.

The watts per gallon rule is for the most part meaningless, so I wouldn't be too concerned about that.

Over my 29 I have a 250 Watt phoenix bulb with no issues -- have a clip on fan over my sump to help with temp control.
