CL Drain Hole size??
Hello,
I need help. I'm putting in a CL with a pump rated around 1200 gph. The inlet on the pump is 1". What size drain do I need on the tank? Also, I'm worried about critters being sucked in. What can I use other than a regular strainer to keep them out? Will the standard strainer work? Thanks in advance! Ben |

I use a 1.5" drain with a standard strainer on my Hammerhead closed loop pump. No issues. I've never had a fish get "stuck" . I've even seen my tangs eating off the strainer, albeit carefully
IMO all those stories I've read about (usually tangs) getting stuck on strainers have been due to unhealthy fish.

So on a 40 BDR with 1200 gph through the drain should I put in a 1.5" drain or am I OK with a 1" drain because that is the size of the pump intake?

1" is fine. I have 5800 gph +/- on 1.5"

Ok,
One more question... Right now at any one time that 1200 gph (before head loss) will be split between 2 returns. I have them slated for 3/4. Is that too big? I'm wondering of approx 550 gph coming through a 3/4" return will give me enough flow. Again, this is a 4 bdr. Thanks, Ben

You should be fine. I have about that coming out of each of my 3/4" outlets, running down the full height of my tank 31".
