Trigon 190 Project

Hi All...

Well... I have been keeping freshwater fish for the last 5 years and i decided that is time to give marines a go

I'm planning to use a Juwel Trigon 190 (190 litres about 50 US gallons, 41 UK gallons) Don't tell me to change the tank because is the biggest i can go at the moment and it fits perfectly in my sitting room

My plan is to start with a very basic setup (meaning no sump, low light, and very low stock levels)... i was thinking in getting a Red Sea Prism Skimmer and start with around 30 kg of good quality live rock... Also i have a Fluval 305 external canister filter that i was thinking on using for mechanical filtration...

Currently the tank has the 2x 20w T8's juwel standatd unit, i was thinking in keeping some zoas and maybe mushies... so i was thinking in maybe getting an additional single 54w T5...

Stocking wise i was thinking in a cleaning crew a couple of clowns and a yellow tang...

Any comments and suggestion greatly appreciated.

regards
Pablo

First of all, the size of the tank is fine. Ever seen a pico? And it might be best to wait and get everything BEFORE starting.

pico means a very small tank usually 5 or so gallon or less. there are actually several people with .9g tanks and even someone with a .5 gallon tank. so pico means extremely small.

first things first

To Reef Central

Second:
nix on the tang... 75-100G minimums here if you want them to survive. A pair of clowns is great and there are plenty of other colorful fish you could put in with them.

Also I am not a fan of that skimmer.. A Coral Life SUPER SKIMMER (125) I think is a much better choice

I've got the same tank as you. Been running it as a reef for four years with no problems. I dont have a skimmer in it either. Just 40lb of live rock, a powerhead and an empty fluval filter for circulation.

Hi octopussy,

can you give me more details of your setup??... having no skimmer will require more frequent water changes?...

I kept a few mushrooms, and a leather coral with the lights supplied with the tank but if you wanna keep more then you really need to upgrade. I've got T5's now.
I change about two buckets of water every week or so. I only have five smallish fish in the tank and a couple of shrimps so the bio load is quite low which is why i can probably get away with this.
I run my fluval filter empty just as extra circulation. The live rock is all the filtration i need. It just requires plenty of movment in the water so you'll need a powerhead aswell.

Anything else you wanna know just ask.
