Unhappy Dips - What am I doing wrong???

I've killed two Frogspawns now, and I'm really not happy about it. The first one was definately my fault though. Here's what I did each time:

First one. Got home with Frogspawn. Poured 500mL of water from the bag into a measuring cup. Added 5 drops Lugol's solution. Let Frogspawn sit in there for 12 minutes, I then dripped from my display into the measuring cup about 3 drops per second for an hour. Put Frogspawn into tank. Frogspawn dead the next day. I think the problem was that the Frogspawn was in the Lugol's getting dripped into (with solution slowly getting weaker) for over an hour. Ooops, that was dumb. I felt really bad.

So yesterday I go and buy a new Frogspawn. This time I was smart, I dripped the coral for an hour. THEN measured 500mL from there and added only 4 drops Lugol's solution. I accidentally left it in there for 22 minutes though instead of the 10-15 the bottle suggests. I then put the coral straight from the dip into the tank. This morning it is dead. Is 22 minutes in the dip enough to kill it?

Am I doing my math right that there should be 5 drops of Lugol's in 500mL of tank water? Is Lugol's what I am supposed to be using? What am I doing wrong?

The place where I get these corals from has the best selection, and best prices, and the corals look better than anywhere else in town (which isn't saying much), but I often get unwanted critters (like red planaria once!) from them. So I want to do a cautionary dip. I'm not sure I want to risk another coral in a dip though! These are the only two corals I have ever dipped. Here I thought I was moving up for the safety of my tank...

^ What would you dip it with? Red bugs are a concern, I have SPS in there as well.
