mixing tub turning brown
When I mix my RODI with salt, a powerhead, heater and let it run a day or two it has been turning the bucket brown. It coats the power head and heater. I can get a picture if you need it, but can anyone tell me if this is normal. Maybe I transferred some algae on the powerhead? There isnt much light going to it.

Most salt mixes contain a bit of ammonia or other nutrients. What you're seeing likely is some sort of microbial bloom. I ignore it, myself.

it's most often caused by prolonged storage of water in the container allowing bacteria to build up on the sides of the container. i use IO salt, i mix for 48 hrs and then the container stays dry and inverted till needed again, I've not cleaned it in at least 10 yrs and it only has a bit of white precipitant on the sides of it.

I have a blue rubbermaid that I use to mix salt water. After a year or so, it developed a very hard tan-colored crusty material on the bottom - I've seen it on a lot of mixing containers. I never worried about it - didn't show anything bad in the water and I haven't destroyed any reefs lately. Well, not because of that anyway.
