Ideas to stock 180 FOWLR??
so I am new to salt water tanks... and i am looking for some idea's on a stock list...
A little background... I have 180 tank with sump center drilled out to drain... 180 lbs of live rock and 180lbs of sand.... I also have a ca reactor... I let the tank cycle for 1 week with live rock and sand... then added some clean up crew due to alge... I let the tank go two more weeks after clean up crew, so total of three weeks, all water levels were good so I bought 8 Damsels... 3 yellow tale 2 blue 2 (not sure what they are black with yellow tails, and 1 orangeish... all my water is very stable so I want to start adding a real stock list... I plan to pull all 8 Damsels when I add anything else... Idea's? I want color and active... Thanks! |

If you doing FOWLR you will not need a CA reactor (for coral/reef only).
Good Luck trying to catch 8 damsels in a 180 with LR. This is your option. Many small fishes?? 3-4 big fishes with a few small?? Preditory tank?? A panther grouper and a marine betta. ect. |

you will have more than enought room for those fish...have fun with those damsels...try catching them after the lights go out, or early in the morning before they come on...

I have read take the total size of all your fish X3 and that should be the size of the tank... is this true... could I add an eel with the fish I mentioned and not over stock with out taking anything away?
Am i better off with 2 percula clowns or 1 maroon? |

Jason, havint the wide variety of fish and the differences in their bioload addition and behavoirs kinda throws out any general rules like that. There will always be large amounts of exceptions.
Not sure on the Eel, I'd imagine as long as it couldn't fit any of it's tankmates into it's mouth that they'd be okay. for the clowns, I'm always happier with a pair of clowns vs. just one. The behavoir differences makes it worth getting the mate. Percula's will be a little more timid than the aggressive maroons. But also don't get nearly as large, at least not as large as a female maroon (seen some 5-7" specimens before) This does not indicate at all that the percula's wont attack you when you reach in the tank either. I've seen some meanies there too.

yeah I saw a dog face puffer and that is the one fish i am pretty set on getting... onther than that I am trying to get some good suggestions...
I feel like I should have a yellow tang and pair of clowns because it is my first salt water tank... and those are the fish I am most familiar to seeing... I like Angels (and I know I cant get one for at least 6 more months) but I am trying to plan out my tank, so I do not over stock and can keep everybody... |

"then added some clean up crew due to alge..."
If you do the puffer or triggers you probably won't have a clean up crew in there for very long. If your not worried about growing coraline, then lighting beyond what you need for your own viewing purposes doesn't become an issue, and so algae buildup usually won't occur. If I did a FOWLR, I would have to add a red coris. Saw one in my LFS just last week and it was so pretty I almost wanted to transform my reef to a FOWLR! Wonder is the Mrs. will let me get another tank?? Highly doubtful. |

I would have some type of trigger. Thats the one type fish I have always wanted, but never been able to have the right set up for it. I really like the huma huma trigger, or the clown trigger.
If your going to go with more aggresive tankmates, I would get the maroon clowns.
