Dilema
Ok here's the scoop.... please choose one of the 4 options and your reason why.
1) 2" Sand Bed with Eggcrate 2) 4"+ Sand Bed with Eggcrate 3) 2" Sand Bed with Starboard 4) 4"+ Sand bed with Starboard I'm still really undecided.... i know the DSB functions to remove nitrates after established.... but what do you think of using starboard instead of eggcrate... would the rock slide on it? I am thinking I may go with starboard even though I bought the eggcrate... simply because there are no holes in it for detritus to get trapped. |

well what i would do is use eggcrate. keep your sand about 2" deep and syphon it every once in a while. shouldnt have any problems. it'll kinda be like having a bare bottom but the looks of sand

Hmm well I want to have a setup that doesn't require constat siphoning... so what would you pick then
If the rock won't slide on the starboard... i'd rather use that... at least it'd be flat underneath everything. What do you think?

I have a 4+" deep sand bed on the bottom of my reef and will be putting one in my new tank I'm setting up.
I don't know why you need the eggcrate or starboard. It would be fine without it. Joyce |

I know it will be fine without... I'd rather take the pressure off the glass though from the live rock. |

Then I would think the starboard would work well, as the eggcrate would be a barrier so that your good burrowing sand critters couldn't get around and through your sand as well.

I would use the 2inch sand bed. No real threat of nitrite spikes and tank crashes and looks nice. I would not recommend siphoning the sand.

What do you mean a tank crash?
I can do that.... could I use a DSB in the refuge area?

How thick should the starboard be.
Also is there a link to order one online at reasonable price? Can't seem to find one that ships to Canada.... could try the local plastic store or home depot?
