Red Slime Problems in New Tank
I have read a lot on the red slime algae and its geting confusing.
Here is my situation, any help / advise is appreciated. New tank, 2 months old 55 gallons A 130 Watts of four types of bulbs live rock thats 3 months cured crushed coral 3 baby nemos (tomato clowns) a little marco algae - cheato in the main tank moderately effective skimmer used tap water a few times since I forgot to buy the water. I am getting brown slimy algae on the top of the rocks and the gravel and the side of the tank. Should I introduce carbon and a UV filter? Should I turn th erocks upside down so that the algae does not face the lights any more? I do not have a clean-up crue just yet. What critters are suggested for crushed coral? Thanks for any poitners. |

Some things to consider... slime algae and diatoms (the brown algae on rocks or sand) are normal for a new tank in the cycling process. They'll go away after the cycling is complete. If your tank is cycled then using tap water or water other than RO or RO/DI will cause red-slime. If you're using RO in a cycled tank then increasing flow and cutting back feedings will help. You can also use chemi-clean to remove red slime but follow directions carefully.
Good luck!
