live rock
I recently started my first salt water tank i used "Ocean Direct Caribbean Live Sand" for substrate and Figi live rock for looks and buffering. They are both starting to turn brown, it looks like algae but i'm not sure if it is. There is no growth on the tank itself or on any of the equipment. I dont know if this is a good thing or bad. Any advice would be great, thanks.

To Reef Central Such blooms are normal for new tanks. They often go away on their own. If not, snails usually make short order of them.

they are diatoms... i'd be surprised if you didn't have such a bloom! don't worry, it won't last long...
i'd start adding a clean up crew.. snails, possible a hermit crab... roughly one for every 2-3 gallons of water. i like cerith, nassarius, trochus, collonista, stomatella, or strombus snails. for hermits, only go with the small species like red-legged. |

To add to Dr Begalke's suggestion re hermit crabs, if you decide to get one or two, make sure you get some extra shells for them -- ebay is a good source -- as funny as it may sound, watching a naked crab run around in panic looking for shelter isn't really cool.
